International Conference on Contemporary Applied Mathematics

Dedicated to Prof. Andrew Majda on the occasion of his 60th birthday

January 19-23, 2009, Fudan University, Shanghai, China

Objectives:

Modern applied mathematics flourished all over the world over the last few decades. There is a great need for further exchange of ideas and collaboration among researchers around the world. The purpose of this conference is to promote international collaboration among researchers from different parts of the world working in different areas.

This conference is concurrent with Prof. Andrew Majda's 60th birthday. Prof. Majda is one of the most prominent applied mathematicians in the world. He is well-known for both his seminal theoretical contributions to partial differential equations and his diverse and fundamental contributions to applied areas such as scattering theory, shock waves, combustion, incompressible flow, vortex motion, turbulent diffusion, and atmosphere ocean science. In his remarkable scientific career so far, Prof. Majda has touched upon the scientific lives of many of us through collaboration, mentor-ship, and/or his influential works. We cherish very much his friendship. Prof. Majda is also committed to promote and advance applied mathematics in China through his collaborative research and training project at Fudan University. Therefore it seems natural to have this conference at Fudan University on this special occasion. The conference will provide a great opportunity and venue for us to showcase contemporary applied mathematics as exemplified by Prof. Majda's works.
