We begin with the equation of motion of vortex filament, and overview the mathematical research of Schroedinger maps with emphasis on the relationship between the geometric setting and the structure of partial differential operators. We also talk about our recent work on the initial value problem for Schroedinger maps of closed Riemannian manifolds to compact almost Hermitian manifolds.
