Problems concerning wave scattering by an array of circular cylinders arise in many applications, including water waves, acoustics, elasticity, and electromagnetism. The basic mathematical theory necessary to solve these problems was developed nearly 100 years ago. In this talk I will describe some modern developments that enable us to make progress in the study of wave interaction with periodic and random arrays of cylinders.
