Life is unpredictable for many reasons, but we imagine that science can help us understand what will happen in the future.  Often this is true, but the mathematics of chaos theory shows that sometimes even the simplest looking systems can produce complicated and unpredictable behaviour.

Understanding the problems and possibilities of chaos is a big but important challenge for today's mathematicians.
