In 1960s G.E.Wall conjectured that the number of maximal subgroups of a finite group is bounded by the order of the group. In this talk I will describe a subfactor generalization of Wall's conjecture and partial confirmation in examples ranging from groups, Hopf algebras, fusion categories and even conformal field theory.
