Lecture I. 4-manifolds fibered by Riemann surfaces

    Abstract. In spite of the recent progress, 4-manifolds are very difficult objects to study in general. Our strategy is to consider a 4-manifold as the trace of a movement of a Riemann surface along a complex parameter, or rather to confine ourselves to the study of such a class of 4-manifolds, i.e., fibered 4-manifolds. In the first lecture, we would like to talk Lefschetz fibrations and /lq/lqaxial/rq/rq fibrations, as two typical examples of fibered 4-manifolds. The two fibrations are in some sense opposite to each other. In particular, axial fibrations contain more general types of degenerations of Riemann surfaces than the Lefschetz type ones.

 


Lecture II. The universal degenerating family  of Riemann surfaces

    Abstract. The study of fibered 4-manifolds suggests the importance of degeneration phenomena of Riemann surfaces. In the second lecture, we would like to construct  the universal degenerating family of Riemann surfaces over the compactified moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We expect that this universal fibration contains rich information about fibered 4-manifolds.
