Abstract:

Optimal control problems abound in all areas of science and engineering. This talk will give an introduction to the control parameterization method for solving nonlinear optimal control problems numerically. We will consider several example problems in train control, tokamak fusion reactors, switching power converters, and glider control. Important topics to be discussed include the time-scaling transformation and the constraint transcription method for handling path constraints. The talk concludes with general advice for research students.
