In this talk we will present several mathematical models widely used in the numerical simulation of semiconductor devices. Particular attention will be paid to these models which have incorporated quantum effects. Then we will proceed to describe the mathematical techniques employed to analyze these models. In particular, the relatively new method of gradient flow will be discussed.
