I will discuss several problems related to electromagnetic wave propagation in complex structures and the mathematical challenges arise from them. In particular, I will focus on the enormous electromagnetic field enhancement in nanostructures, resonances in photonic nanocavities, and optical wave propagation in random media. The ongoing work along this direction will also be highlighted.
