I will explain the genesis of a conjecture relating periods and derivatives of L-functions (in the case of elliptic curves this recovers the Chowla-Selberg formula expressing the periods in terms of the Gamma function at rationnal points) and its role in the recent removal of the generalized Riemann hypothesis in the proof of the Andre-Oort conjecture.
