Einstein metrics are natural canonical metrics on Riemannian manifolds. In dimensions two and three, Einstein metrics all have constant sectional curvature. We will discuss recent progress on the classification of Einstein metrics with positive sectional curvature in dimension four. If time permitted, we will also discuss the rigidity of gradient shrinking Ricci solitons, which can be considered as natural generalizations of Einstein metrics, in dimension four.
