We consider a constant mean curvature (CMC) 2-surface S bounding a compact 3-manifold M with nonnegative scalar curvature. By deriving a suitable collar extension with nonnegative scalar curvature of S, we are able to apply results related to the positive mass theorem to obtain information on the geometry of S in M.
