One important problem in seismology is to recover the material properties of the Earth from seismic record. The Earth, which can be modeled as an elastic medium, is typically anisotropic and heterogeneous. I will talk about our recent studies on determining these properties using boundary sources. Mathematically, the problem is formulated as an inverse problem for the elastic wave equations.
