Title: Nonlinear Dynamical Systems (非线性系统) MATH130075

Text: Strogatz supplemented with notes and research literature

The syllabus is as follows:

1) Overview of Nonlinear Dynamics

2) One-Dimensional Flows

3) Bifurcations

4) Flows on the Circle

5) Linear Systems

6) Phase Plane

7) Limit Cycles

8) Bifurcations Revisited

9) Topics in Chaos

10) Examples from Research in Biology, Physics, etc...

Preriquisistes:

Strict: Calculus

First course in Differential Equations and Linear Algebra

         Suggested:

First Course in Physics including calculus-based Mechanics and E&M Theory

A scientific programming language such as Matlab, Mathematica, (or C, C++, Java)

Advantageous but not necessary:  A first course in Biology.

Notes: Calculus is a strict requirement. Other topics can be taken concurrently.

I will supplement the course contents with whatever material is required to provide the necessary backround.

Grading: The grade will be derived from weekly assignments, in-class presentations andseveral computational projects.

Language: Although the class will be taught in English, the instructor is able to speak and understand simple Chinese. 教授将用英文的教课。可是教授又会说得简单的汉语又听得懂简单的汉语。

It's an undergraduate course suitable for math, engineering, physics and even quantitative biology students.
